Government of Saskatchewan Proclaims Nuclear Science Week October 19-23

CANADA, October 19 - Released on October 19, 2026

The Government of Saskatchewan is proclaiming the week of October 19-23, 2026, as Nuclear Science Week in the province. This week highlights Saskatchewan's growing leadership in nuclear technology, built on decades of excellence in uranium production, continued innovation and strategic investments that are helping strengthen energy security and economic growth.

"Nuclear Science Week is an opportunity to recognize Saskatchewan's strengths and the exciting future ahead for our province," Crown Investments Corporation Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "With world-class uranium resources, a skilled workforce, a strong mining industry, leading research institutions and growing nuclear expertise, Saskatchewan has what it takes to be a leader in Canada's nuclear future. Our government is committed to building on these advantages to advance nuclear energy, create new opportunities for Saskatchewan people and strengthen energy security for generations to come."

In fall 2025 the Saskatchewan First: Energy Security Strategy and Supply Planwas released, setting the direction for Saskatchewan's energy future. Building on that vision, the Delivering Energy Security Through Nuclear Power update was released last month, establishing a target of bringing at least 2,600 megawatts (MW) of nuclear power into service by 2050. This will provide the reliable, affordable and secure electricity needed to power economic growth, support new investment and meet the needs of a growing province.

Nuclear development is a multi-decade undertaking and Saskatchewan is planning accordingly. SaskPower is studying a site on the Rafferty Reservoir, near the City of Estevan, to confirm it can safely support up to two nuclear small modular reactors and is assessing technologies for large nuclear applications in Saskatchewan.

As the world's second-largest uranium supplier, responsible for nearly one-quarter of global production, Saskatchewan's robust uranium sector will fuel these opportunities. Industry leaders such as Cameco and Orano Canada have chosen Saskatchewan as home for their headquarters, while companies like Denison and NexGen are constructing new world-class uranium projects in the province's north.

Research will ensure Saskatchewan remains at the forefront of nuclear technology development. Through SaskPower, the Government of Saskatchewan will invest $6.3 million during the next six years to establish four new nuclear research chairs at post-secondary institutions in the province.

The Government of Saskatchewan is also establishing new initiatives to ensure the next generation of our nuclear workforce is educated and ready to work in the sector. This fall, Saskatchewan students can register in Energy Production 20, a new high school course that introduces students to the energy sector, including nuclear, coal, natural gas, renewables and Saskatchewan-relevant electricity content.

In the post-secondary sector, SaskPower has invested $4 million to establish the University of Regina's Small Modular Reactor Safety, Licensing and Testing Centre, and the University of Saskatchewan's partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency will serve to advance workforce development. Saskatchewan Polytechnic has also partnered with the United Kingdom's National Skills Academy for Nuclear to deliver nuclear training programs in Canada.

Together, these initiatives ensure we have the talent, expertise and research capabilities required to grow our province's nuclear industry for decades to come.

The public is invited to mark Nuclear Science Week 2026 on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Saskatchewan Science Centre. From 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., visitors can enjoy special activities highlighting nuclear science, followed by a "Let's Talk Nuclear" presentation by Dr. Arthur Situm from the University of Regina, introducing the fundamentals of nuclear energy and providing the public a question-and-answer session.

During Nuclear Science Week, Minister Harrison is attending the World Nuclear Supply Chain Conference in Manila, Philippines, strengthening Saskatchewan's position in the global nuclear sector.
