Flexible online learning opening new pathways into UK tech careers for women

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, August 13, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- As thousands of graduates leave UK campuses this summer and employers reassess what entry into a digital career should require, one shift stands out: flexible, online tech education is becoming an increasingly important route through which women are entering the UK's digital workforce.

Women currently hold around 22% of technology roles in the UK, a figure that has risen by only three percentage points in five years. Meanwhile, Skills England's Annual Skills Report 2026 warns that demand for priority occupations — including digital roles — is expected to grow by roughly 25% over the next decade, and that the traditional education pipeline alone cannot meet it. Large-scale reskilling of the existing workforce, the report concludes, is now essential.

Flexibility appears to be an important factor in narrowing the gender gap.

Industry research has found that remote and flexible working arrangements increased female applicants for tech roles by 28%.

Women's study choices are also tracking where the jobs are heading: BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, found that applications for AI degrees rose 15% among UK women in the most recent UCAS cycle, even as overall computing applications declined — a sign that learners are following emerging skills demand rather than traditional course labels.

UK employers are actively rewriting entry requirements as AI transforms roles: recent research for City Hall found that more than three-quarters of London business leaders expect significant demand for AI and advanced digital skills within five years, up from 66% in 2025.

“If the UK is serious about closing its digital skills gap, it cannot afford to draw on barely a fifth of half the population,” adds Moola.
